Brandt-Roberts Galleries is pleased to present Unearthed, a group exhibition featuring an array of multifarious artists whose work will be grounded upon the fragility and fortitude of the landscape and the natural environment.
Unearthed is a visually stimulating representation of our perspective on the Earth's changing climate systems and those that show reverence for its natural wonder. By skillfully weaving together elements that not only showcase the urgency of addressing climate transitions, this exhibition will also be an invitation to the observers to consider their own individual and collective roles in environmental stewardship.
Environmental art pertains to a movement adopted by artists of differing disciplines, who are inspired by nature or utilize it as a raw creative material. These works aspire to transmit the beauty, and transience of nature, thus encouraging the observer to consider how they value their relationship with it. The natural elements of our planet have inspired us to express ourselves beyond words for thousands of years of civilization, from Palaeolithic cave paintings in Namibia to high impact digital photographs of the animal kingdom in the Arctic. For centuries, the landscape’s appearance in art was meant to construe awe for our natural world. In the 20th century, alongside rising global concerns surrounding the state of the environment’s health, and our impact as humans upon it, many artists began creating works in collaboration with the physical world to draw attention to ecological issues, as well as our relationship and contribution to it. Since the 1990’s, environmental art has gained more traction as a defined concept as artists have been forced to think more about their surroundings as a cohesive system in which we as humans have a central part to play.
The contemporary artists featured in Unearthed all endeavor to navigate the responsibility that they feel in stewarding their micro and macro environments. Through an array of mediums varying from gouache, to oil on gesso, to acrylic infused in bubble wrap, the exhibition will address the beauty and desolation of our changing environment. These exhibiting artists include Christopher Burk, Cody Heichel, Richard Lillash, Jason Morgan, Bernard Palchick, Jolene Powell; with visiting artists Dillon Beck, Dionnys Matos, Char Norman, Danielle Rante and Aaron Troyer.
Unearthed is on view from Wednesday, April 3rd through May 12th, during gallery hours, Wednesday- Friday from 11-5pm, Saturday- Sunday from 1-5pm, and by private appointment. There will be an opportunity to meet the exhibiting artists from 5-7:30pm on Wednesday, April 3rd. To request additional information, please email info@brandtrobertsgalleries.com or call 614.223.1655.
