We will be featuring NYC-based painter and colorist, Nikki Terry, for the month of March. A pioneer of Black, minimalist expressionism, Terry is a graduate of the Pratt Institute's MFA program.
The excavated surfaces of her work are inspired by her own personal history, as well as visceral responses to the dark histories of so many silenced women. Painting with her hands enables her in climbing through her dark memories, to find new identities, and to reconnect with her inner child. She endeavors to translate these memories into layered and abstract stories. As she scrapes away color, she hopes to reveal what is underneath and to show a path to emerging identities. For Terry, her work is a process of moving from numbness to rebirth. They are expressions of reimagined narratives, of old stories that rested in darkness and she is now bringing them to to light.
This feature is on view from March 2nd- March 31st.
