To the Skies I’ve Yet to See
Andrea Myers
Brandt-Roberts Galleries is delighted to present “To the Skies I’ve Yet to See”, a solo exhibition by Andrea Myers, a multidisciplinary artist whose works explore the world of textiles, installation, and sculpture. Myers ’ newest body of work will feature a combination of layered works on paper and textile collages revealing a lively dynamic between color and formation. In a meticulous process of compilation and organization, Myers’ creates small and large-scale collages using a variety of methods. In addition to sewing and painting, she uses mixed media as a means of transcending the form and function of the materials.
Utilizing bright, saturated colors assembled together using found materials, her sourcing of varied textiles allows her to connect the physical components of her work with the vision behind them. Donated domestic textiles and utilitarian fabrics are repurposed and renewed, converging together on her constructed surface. Rectangles of cloth are treated as prepared brush strokes or pixels of color, a practical employment of the palette that the manufactured world provides. Zigzags of fabric brush strokes pulse on and off the wall, building a soft geometry that innovates the original form and function of the fabric. Like contemporary quilts, her works are the intersection between fabric and abstraction. Unlike traditional quilt making however, Myers intentionally finds intrigue in imperfect stitching.
Although Myers’ is often most recognized by her textile work, paper was her first and primary medium. The nature of this material allows her to work in an accumulative mindset to build dimensionality and form. Through assembling and then tearing the paper into layers, her pieces are an exploration in exposing spaces in which the layers can be revealed anew, and how they interact with each other. In the painting of her paper, Myers’ employs acrylic paint, latex paint and screen- printing ink, using a squeegee to push the ink through open screen-printing screens to create a marbling effect. Her works on paper emulate the effects of a weathering process, paralleling subtle, everyday shifts such as peeling paint or cracked sidewalks. Reflecting the small fractures found in everyday life, Myers’ work thus inserts a human presence into the larger landscape, suggesting a vulnerability that is akin to an ever-changing environment. Her artistic practice and subsequent body of work demonstrates that joy and wonder are attainable within a limited space and with simple supplies.
Inspired by the connection between communities, Andrea uses the concept of patchwork and layering in her textile and paper work to explore the extent to which diverse materials can work harmoniously. Roused by the intrigue derived from the push and pull of additive and subtractive creative processes, the recurring geometric motifs and abstract shapes are a testament to the innovative creativity within Andrea’s artwork, as well as her ability to turn diversity into a form of art. In the collective whole, fabrics become a stitched and seamless community, symbolizing a tactile moment in time.
Based in Ohio, Myers’ work has been featured in numerous galleries and exhibitions, including current features at the Akron Art Museum, and the Herron School of Art, Indianapolis. Her work has also been displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Hyde Park Art Center, Art Miami, and the Columbus Museum of Art. Myers’ held her first solo museum exhibition, Neon Speed, in 2020 at the Textil und Rennsport Museum, Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany.
