March 18 - May 3, 2024. An opening reception in Heichel’s honor will be on Friday, March 22, 2024, from

Ohio-based artist Cody Heichel seamlessly transitions between watercolor and oil, capturing life's nuances
in his Cleveland studio or painting from direct observation. His latest collection, unveiled on the occasion
of his 40th birthday, showcases exquisite watercolor paintings on paper. Heichel observes everyday views
and portrays them as intimate and special - homely scenes, nearby streets and gardens, a summer storm.
These fleeting glimpses of life resonate with intrinsic meaning and profound feelings.
Influenced by artistic luminaries such as Alice Schille, Charles Burchfield, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner,
Heichel masterfully manipulates color and form. His subjects, though abstracted, remain rooted in a
recognizable reality. Describing his process, Heichel says “For me, painting is an act of noticing, and
interpreting the things I find myself drawn to. As I paint, I am drifting between states of observing,
remembering, and imagining. This process gives way to paintings which may be true to the subject, and
others that evolve into entirely imagined scenes.”
A self-taught artist, Heichel shared his expertise by teaching a painting class for OSU's graduate students
and their families from 2013 to 2022 through the OSU Health and Wellness program. His remarkable
accolades include The Past Presidents Award at the 100th Annual National Watercolor Society
International Juried Exhibition in 2020, Best of Show in the 2020 and 2019 Ohio Plein Air Society Annual
Competition, and Best of Show in the Central Ohio Watercolor Society 2019 Spring Exhibition.
In 2017, he received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowship and was selected for the
GCAC’s 2018 Artist Exchange Program in Dresden, Germany, where he enjoyed a two-month artist residency.
Represented by Brandt-Roberts Galleries in Columbus, Ohio, and Visual Index in Winston-Salem, North Carolina,
Heichel continues to captivate audiences with his evocative and award-winning artwork.
