A deep interest in Japanese art, thought and philosophy have led me to the explore the principles of wabi-sabi, which celebrates what is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. My work acknowledges thoughts and ideas about how the continually changing nature of all beings and objects affect the view of oneself and how place and identity are inextricably bound to one another. In my recent collages, I explore the philosophical concept of MA. I am fascinated by “space within a space” and how it can pertain to literal, physical and negative space, but may also refer to the perception of a pause in time, an interval or emptiness in space that allows us the time to breath, feel and connect. Author Junichiro Tanizaki wrote,“ We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and darkness, that one thing against another creates.”
"My work is informed by extraordinary life experiences that have shaped my aesthetic and world view. I have an intense curiosity about places and the ways in which they can unite us. As an artist, I don’t simply ‘see’ visual stimuli — I absorb them, and they become a part of my psyche."
