Richard Lillash is a Columbus-based artist and illustrator known for vivid paintings that combine active brushwork with richly saturated color. Working primarily in landscape and still life, Lillash approaches painting as a physical and immersive act of observation, earning recognition as a “painter’s painter.” His work deconstructs light, form, and color into expressive, individual brushstrokes that reveal the underlying structure and energy of the world around him.
Lillash continually experiments with texture and surface, incorporating flashes of bare canvas and tinted board to create a sense of spontaneity and immediacy within carefully constructed compositions. Influenced by Post-Impressionist traditions, his paintings often feature bold color relationships, dynamic patterns, and exaggerated perspectives that heighten the emotional and visual experience of familiar environments.
In recent years, Lillash participated in artist exchanges in Havana, Cuba and Genoa, Italy, further expanding the international scope of his practice. His work was featured in the 2025 edition of the 15th Havana Biennial.
“Whether I’m observing a landscape or a still-life, I’m continually striving to break down and simplify light, form and color to create a compelling painting.”
Lillash is a graduate of Columbus College of Art & Design and has a national collector base. He recently participated in the Highlands Nature Sanctuary Artist Residency and was selected to create a large commission for the Downtown Hilton 2.0.
